Animated Avatar with GIMP

You can now make cool animated graphics with gimp. This tutorial will show you a simple animated avatar.

  1. Open a new file and add your desired image and size of avatar. I'll be making a 100x100 avatar with this image.
  2. Now, click on your text tool , click on your canvas, and type in your text.

Afterwards, click on your move option tool to position your text properly. To put an outline around your text, click HERE for the tutorial. This is how my avatar looks so far.

  3. Next, is to animate the text "DEL". Copy your text depending on the animation style you want. If you want your text to change its color 2 times then just copy the text 1 time, if you want to change the color of each letter then copy the text depending on the number of letters you have. For this tutorial I will copy mine 3 times. Your layers window should now look like so.
  4. Now, click on your magic wand tool . Go to your first copied text and select on the 1st letter. Then click on your fill bucket tool and select a color for your text. I chose white for this tutorial. Now, fill your first letter with the color of your choice.
  5. Now, click on your next copied layer (DEL#2). Be sure you click on the eye to make the layer visible again. Then just repeat instruction number 4 above on the second letter. Then continue with the rest of the letters until you finish the whole text.
  6. Then to view your animation, click on Filters=>Animation=>Playback. In this tutorial, this is how my playback looks like:

As you can see, it isn't quite the way we want it to turn out. We still need to twick the image a bit.
  7. Click on your outline layer and copy it 3 times. Place the outline layers below each text layer.
  8. Then right click each text layer and click on merge down. Your layer window should now be like so:
  9. Now, click on the second layer (outline), right-click on it and click on merge down.
  10. It's time to save your avatar. Click on File=>Save us, then name your image with a .gif extension (ex. avatar.gif). The window below should appear.

Be sure to choose and save your image as an animation.
Now this is how our avatar turned out.
